Sometimes resentment of the power of an aristocracy led to revolts. ‘Tyrants’, or absolute rulers, were then appointed to restore order. They were usually supported by the army. Many city states, such as Corinth and Athens went through a period of tyranny. Tyrants and nobles had no written laws or rules to follow.
